Do you have any suggestions for movie nights?

submitted by edited

I’m disabled and can’t go places atm. I’m getting into movie nights via twitch streamers, and I’m gonna help organise one of them.

What are some films that would be good to watch? We stream via discord

The Austin Powers movies are fun if you are looking for something light with broad appeal

You know I’ve never seen Galaxy quest. I should put it on my watch list anyway

I’m just here to add weight to that sentiment: Galaxy Quest is up there with Princess Bride as required light, family friendly viewing.

The new Knives Out is coming up. The first and second deserve a rewatch.

The first Matrix, too bad they never made any sequels.

The Mask of Zorro is my all time top guilty pleasure.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula is great and incredibly horny.

Princess Bride.

Hot Fuzz, gets better every time you watch it.

Labyrinth, yes plz.

Muppets Christmas Carol, later in the year, but like the best Muppets movie.

Wallace and Grommet, any but Curse of the Wererabbit is my favourite.

Rocky Horror Picture Show, depending on the group.

Similarly, The Room. Set up some spoon emojis 🥄🥄🥄🥄🥄🥄🥄

Anything with Tom Hanks. Apollo 13, Forrest Gump and A Man Called Otto if you need somewhere to start.

Puss in boots the last wish.

It’s really weird just how good that movie was

The first one was also really good if you can excuse some of the fairytale style humor that Shrek had kinda’ overused in some of those.

Some random movies I like off the top of my head:

The Princess Bride

Terminator 2

Kate and Leopold

Dogma

Memento

Oculus

Catch Me If You Can

Galaxy Quest

Matchstick Men

Kung Fu Hustle

Whiplash and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri are the two best movies I’ve seen in a long long time

Not heard of them thanks mate 👍

While I agree that those are two great movies, you kinda hafta know your audience for them. They aren’t family friendly, but fine for teens and up.

They’re either perfect for group viewing because they are likely to prompt discussion OR a mismatch if the folks just want to zone out to entertainment without thinking about what would happen next, or what should have happened, and so on.

You can also have a look at what some other watch parties are showing.

Here’s a calendar of events on Mastodon & Bluesky

https://livetweety.wordpress.com/

FYI in 20 minutes, #KungFuSat on Mastodon is starting the Jim Jarmusch crime drama Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai .

You can also use an online service to keep a wish list of films or see other people’s lists. Many people use Letterboxd or Trakt. I’ve just started using the fediverse service NeoDB.

one of my favorites to suggest is a classic called Paper Moon.

It’s black and white and has that slower pacing of some older movies. I think it also stands up and has the kind of comedy that endures. We watch it every year around the holidays.

The Big Lebowski

Fargo

Pineapple Express

Anchorman

Die Hard/Die Hard 3

Die Hard! Of course! Good call

u could work thru the moviedrome list for some cult classics (i have slowly been doing this myself, as well as trying to watch the corresponding intro if its on youtube), they are not always good movies (tho a lot are). but they will likely get some opinions flowing, there’s a good variety of genres as well

Do you like “so bad they’re good” movies? Pick any one of these (some even border on legit good):

  • Rad (1986)
  • Miami Connection (1988)
  • Voyage of the Rock Aliens (1984)
  • Surf II (1984)
  • Cool as Ice (1991)
  • Double Trouble (1992)
  • Billy Madison
  • The Breakfast Club
  • Dodgeball
  • Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
  • Ghostbusters I & II
  • Happy Gilmore
  • Indiana Jones 1-3
  • The Shining
  • Super Troopers
  • Young Frankenstein

And it’s kind of cheating cuz it’s not technically a movie but the mini-series Over the Garden Wall is a must for the fall and all together runs about 2 hours

Good tip re garden wall thanks 😊

Fresh (1994)

Pump up the volume (1990)

anything made from Astrid Lindgren or Tove Johansson

1972 Mumin (T.J.) et al

1984 Ronja Rövardotter (A.L.) et al

also

1985 Misfits of Science

1986 Desert Hearts

2005 CreepSchool

if you’ven’t already seen Hideo Miyazaki/Ghibli

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Princess Mononoke

Howl’s Moving Castle

My Neighbour Totoro
