I understand their frustration: if I knew universities were doing that here I would be frustrated beyond belief to, but these people need to see there is a whole world outside of the US. The scientific world is not ending, the US is just going to suffer from not being able to educate themselves for a few generations.

It makes me sad that that quote came from a first-year PhD student.
Will be interesting to see where they go. Science funding in Europe is a fraction of what it is in the US, so Europe wouldn’t be able to absorb large numbers of scientists leaving the US. China is probably the only other nation doing science investment on the scale of the US, I wonder how many might end up there.
Interesting that Terence himself pointed to offers from China as interested in embracing him.
Yeah, somebody of his calibre moving to China would be a very big deal.
