Game of Thrones ended so badly, I gave up on the whole storyline.

And this thing is way worse than the final seasons of GOT. S2 was utterly pointless.

I’m kinda surprised?

This feels like the James Cameron Avatar. It’s so big and hyped, yet it doesn’t seem like anyone is into it. Like… is anyone here watching this? Anyone y’all know?

It has nearly 500,000 ratings on IMDB at an average of 8.3/10. Not only is that very high, it’s also more ratings than most TV shows that are discussed here. I’m not sure where you’ve got this idea that no one is watching this show from.

I feel the same as the commenter. I just dont know anyone watching it, I never hear anyone talking about it. I keep forgetting it’s even a show. It just has no presence. I don’t even see posts about it.

I think that’s why we feel like it’s one of those ghost hits.

Could it possibly be the biannual release date (which we are in the middle of currently) that is contributing to this illusion? For comparison, Game of Thrones had an annual release release cycle until the final season. Biannual releases are becoming more common these days so it’s quite normal for TV series to fade in and out of the collective public consciousness. That shouldn’t be confused for people not watching or enjoying this show, though. It is very popular and I have friends and family who are very into it when a new season eventually rolls around.

That’s what I was looking for, thanks! My social circle is not very big, hence I was wondering if “anyone knew anyone” watching it.

I don’t know if it’s release schedule has anything to do with the hype. Honestly I think there’s just a ton of TV and a lot of noise in channels about TV. And ‘cultural icons’ like the original GoT are quite rare now.

My brother and I chat about every episode when a new season comes out (sometimes we’ll watch them together too), and I got my partner into it earlier this year. I think most of my friends watch it, but as I said the longer release cycle means it’s not like a rolling “water cooler” discussion for us. It goes away for a while and we’ll get into other things and then as it gets closer to a new season the hype will start to build again and we’ll all be really into it for a few months.

Depending on your social media usage, it could also be that you just aren’t seeing the big online “fandom” that exists for the show. For example, there are some huge and very active communities on reddit that regularly talk about this show, but if you’re only using Lemmy then perhaps you haven’t come across that discussion.

All I hope is that Matt Smith gets his opportunity to shine. He is meant to embody greatness, larger-than-life characters.

Second season was a waste of an actor for him.

And no, I haven’t read the books.

No point in reading the books - GRRM didn’t finish this series either. Said he’d do so after GoT. So probably never.

This “series” is an outline, “Fire & Blood” is not a book series, it is one book and is completely finished. It brings the timeline up to the birth of Aemon Targaryen, the Maester of the Nights Watch.

GRRM did not say he would finish it because there is nothing to finish … “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” begins right where Fire & Blood left off, about 100 years before the events of ASOIAF.
