I do that by referencing the other company policy that says I am not to stick customer information into ai systems, and the customers policy of external contractors are not to export their data outside the EU. as I only work with customer systems my hands are tied both ways.
One of my friends is a software engineer. Her first job out of college was doing a bunch of data stuff to build an LLM. She made the data processing and export take months and obfuscated every attempt to fix the problem until they took her off the project. My hero.
Great article full of interviews with workers sharing their plight and solutions.
i wish i could use any of the tactics that the people have tried, but i get the feeling that it’ll all blow back on me.
Hostile, anti-democratic work environment with indentured overtones: next-level strategies required.
cf. the CIA/OST manual from mid-20th C on sabotage and resistance under the risk of death.
Innocent seeming tactics like work-to-rule or demanding policy adherence whenever possible can slow foolish management. Talk to coworkers carefully. Document spectacular failures of management directives but innocently, as if you don’t know whose fault it is. Set things up so they will break later, when you are not around and without a trace.
Ask for reasons; the last paragraph of the article sums up that asking them to explain the insanity is effective. Remember: it is slow and cumulative effort required to change things, be patient and persistent and alert for opportunities and risks.
I cannot for the life of me understand AI mandates.
Who doesn’t want to be able to get their work done easier? Nobody.
Then it follows you shouldn’t have to tell your employees to use a tool if it makes them however much as productive as CEOs think that tech demo should make them.
I think it’s pretty obvious that at the exec level AI is the ultimate hoodwinking machine. It’s made 90% of them look like the out of touch morons they are. The 10% or whatever that aren’t trying to force this down their staff’s throats in the hopes they can replace said staff are coming out smelling like roses.
Don’t fit a square peg in a round hole.
If AI actually made people faster and more productive, they could simply set faster timelines and people would use the tools.
There are AI mandates because the people in leadership are stupid and dishonest. “Return to office” has the same shape. For many people working from home is healthier and more productive, and it’s better for the environment not to commute as much, but the emotional needs of leadership are primary.
If AI actually made people faster and more productive, they could simply set faster timelines and people would use the tools.
I want to work with your team. I work with a sysadmin who, rather than using the up-arrow, will scroll up in his terminal to copy / paste the last command he ran. Even if that command was just “ls -l”.
It’s maddening to watch and horribly inefficient. But he’s always done it that way.
Many people simply do not seek a faster way of doing things.
Many people simply do not seek a faster way of doing things.
Right. But if you’re a soulless manager, and you set faster timelines, you PIP and fire the people who don’t make it. They’ll use the tools or be replaced.
It’s the same as an AI mandate, except less stupid. (It can still be stupid if you set the timelines impossibly fast, but management is not known for being smart or informed)
I wouldn’t do this as me because I’m not a soulless manager.
I do not want to work with such people, and rite incompetence is something any organization should try to combat.
But forcing period to use AI tools will only mask this problem.
If the metric is stupid and the metric is also tied to comp, there should be absolutely zero surprise when everyone starts gaming the metric.
Who doesn’t want to be able to get their work done easier? Nobody.
While this seems true, this is not my experience. It is easier to do things they way you have always done them, because it involves no learning, and thus some people will continue unless forced.
This is both accurate and understating the issue. People can’t be downright hostile to new ideas even if it makes their life easier.
At some companies, it’s because they’re hoping to use the data of the employees using the AI to automate their job away.
Every fucking customer hates our AI answering the phone. Yet USAA insist that customer use it. A lot of customers have told me they are considering going somewhere else for insurance over it.
Unfortunately I think most of the another use it too. At least with All state, progressive, and state farm and some other have local agents. But can promise the Allstate one only do sales you got issues or questions they direct to customer service that uses AI to answer the phone.
Fuck up part we all using the same AI tool even phone companies.
I dumped my phone company over their AI answering system.
It was totally broken:
- you can’t know when the AI is lying or will do something it says it will for you
- it’s not designed to be helpful, it’s designed to keep you away from humans
- this particular system required you to say a correct and available time you want a callback, and if you were incorrect it would hang up on you.
I’ll bet the cost metrics looked great, 100% of calls being handled without a callback! Oh, the customers leaving is unrelated, talk to the retention department.
Just utter fucking stupidity. No, not stupidity, complete disregard for the customer to serve some department heads self interests. There needs to be a word stronger than greed…
Some companies are in a race to the bottom on customer service, quality and customer satisfaction. They seem to assume the hogs will continue slurping up what’s at the trough. It’s allowed some to take marketshare that’s been off the table for upstarts for the last 20 years. Example: Independent game developers on Steam, some of which are lone developers without a team, now have a healthy business thanks to the big AAA game companies faltering. It’s not 100% about AI, but that’s part of the issue they have. Knowing when to rely on AI, possibly allowing a reduction in staff, versus when they’re over-relying on AI, seems elusive for them.
Who doesn’t want to be able to get their work done easier? Nobody.
Err, people that don’t want to be made redundant? You haven’t been at all paying attention to the history of automation!
I (like most devs) could always crap out low quality contributions very fast before LLMs, they could just lower the standards like they are doing now and they can see productivity and tech debt going 10x
What’s even funnier (at least in my current workplace), the budget for LLMs is capped at 20 usd monthly per dev, I can go though that in a 2 hours session with Opus. So make up your fucking mind, do you want the 10x output (and tech debt)? or you don’t?
The fist in that image looks very weird to me. When I make a fist and look at it from the same angle and compare that to the image, the pinky in the image is too far towards the middle of the hand and not close enough to the edge, and the thumb extends way more to the right of the arm than mine does. I wonder what this hand looks like when not on a fist, or if it’s an AI generated image.
My default fist also does, but all I need to do is angle my hand towards the thumb and then it looks like the picture

My company is very funny in this regard. They tell us to use it as much as possible… Yet I ran out credits in like 5 prompts.
So it was as much as possible.
it sounds insane though, replace the “ai” with anything else and it would effectively be like telling you to waste companys money as much as possible
Fun read! I think a closed fist with seven fingers would have been a better illustration tough…
Is it beneficial to risk your own job to save your company from its own stupid leadership knowing they’ll learn nothing and do something worse down the line?
Asking legitimately.
Burn all your tokens updating your CV/resume and filling out all those interview coding exams.
its not just ai really. a lot of bs going on. I say people should risk their jobs to not bend to bs. work like you think you should and don’t worry about if they think that is good enough. the modern world sucks and we should live in it genuinely as that is the only thing we have left to ourselves.
No, it isn’t. Yes, you might think that this is a phase going away soon, but if your company is mandating you to use AI, just do it or search for another job.
Ai sites s hilarious. I am pushing to have an agent installed on each kub pod for first diagnostic. We have an hackaton in a month, this will be hilarious. I plan to chest to win by renting on of the kub host with GPU for the POC. I am pretty sure their chief would be on for having his service becoming unremovable.
You type like an AI user.
… Okey. You dunno why ?
