This pier used to extend over a kilometer from the shore, to reach deep water vessels to allow for the transport of sugarcane.
Now however, it reaches a “mere” 800 meters

This led me on a rabbit hole. Apparently the longest pier in the world is 8km, the Progreso Pier in Mexico. And it’s still in use for both cargo and passengers.
It’s cool but it has a different vibe since it’s a solid foundation rather than wooden. Apparently the longest wooden one is Busselton Jetty in Western Australia which is 1.8km long.
It looks so beautiful and peaceful there!
