Actually they are childhood/teen friends, so it’s several decades, I spent hours almost every day with them for many years so we were pretty close, but then HS hit and we just kinda drifted apart.
I understand - had a similar moment recently re: my own high school friends, which is where my comment comes from (though in my case it was closer to a decade than decades). Some were happy to hear from me, others ghosted.
All of this to say, send a message. You never know!

You don’t really reappear in a person’s live after a decade unless it’s a relative and/or the occasion is a funeral.
That’s sad, I really would like to reconnect with some people now that I understand myself better but perhaps it is too much time.
