Being good at science has led to having an expensive hobby… in my case anyway haha
Yeah, I’ve got many expensive hobbies now. It’s a bit cheaper if you can do it all yourself/make your own equipment
No, the cost cost goes up sharply.
| Phase | Hobby | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Crochet | $100 |
| 2 | 3d Printer | $250 |
| 3 | Soldering station | $400 |
| 4 | Homelab | $1000 |
| 5 | custom eBike, LLC, self-hosted website | 6 - 10k |
| 6 | Paramotor | $22k + $1.5k/yr |
The deeper you get into engineering, weather, networking, software dev, academia the more your hobbies cost. This is also ignoring the cost of acquiring all that knowledge first (at least $100k at a state school).
custom eBike, LLC, self-hosted website
At this point I have to ask if you’re doing a hobby or starting a business, because these are not the same thing.
I didn’t say it didn’t? I said it’s a bit cheaper if… I can tick off a bunch of those, some for more than you’ve listed, and plenty of others
Self-hosted website looks too expensive, unless you paid someone to make it. I host FoundryVTT for my group, and the only paid thing was Foundry itself and my internet-connected PC I already had.
Public IP? No need to pay extra. DuckDNS when you’re not behind CG-NAT or Cloudflare ZeroTrust reverse proxy when you do or have no access to your router.
Domain? I’ve seen at least two sites that provide them for free - digitalplat and the other I can’t remember.
Sorry your version isn’t exploitable. Mine is, and I’ll tell you the grass isn’t greener over here.
The math autism is really just the profound desire to start a rock band your garage autism, where the math becomes a coping mechanism.
Is it Lego?
I am not saying its not lego, but if it was wouldn’t that mean i would also be building lego from time to time? Which i am rarely
I mean who would continuously buy lego, if they can’t find the time/energy to build it and just keep storing the unbuild lego all over your house.
That would be ridiculous right?

this was me buying $100 yoyos… then I got an associates in applied mathematics and I now can’t stop talking about it.
moral of the story: every hobby leads to math autism
That’s what I came here to say. Find a math/ science adjacent hobby (note: hobby must be expensive) to devote a disgusting amount of time researching, then use some of those skills to find a job. I like computers, 3d printers, and cars; I got a job servicing and installing industrial equipment.
Sometimes you don’t even have to partake in the expensive hobby. Just spend weeks reading about it on Wikipedia and forums and watch a few dozen hours of YouTube videos on it and you’re bound to get enough side knowledge to be useful in some field.
This was also me with music production. Then I got a MS in electrical engineering and I can’t stop talking about math.
Imagine waking up in the middle of the night, not being able to sleep, and figuring out that Eurorack exists. 🥲
I’m thankful that I’ve been able to resist, so far.
You think math and science aren’t expensive fields?
Tbf I heard universities don’t require rich parents in sane countries.
signal generator - $2000
oscilioscope - $200000
nope, and that confirms it.
I haven’t bought an oscilloscope in a while but that seems like way too much.
well, generally these can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand or 10s of thousands of dollars. The ones we use in my university are about the 10s of thousands range.
That said, you can find some for 100,000 to 200,000
I love Plastic Crack!
My favourite hobby is buying the tools and supplies for hobbies that I never really get in to…
Knitting, with the really nice yarn.
TBF, I get a lot of time with my $50 of yarn while I knit with it. Dollar per hour, it’s cheaper than going to the moves. And I get a neat object at the end.
edit: and knitting is just math in disguise
Y’all need
Jesusgardening.Fpv is so expensive ;(
I want to get into it, especially since I now have a 3D printer and can print custom parts, but even that hobby itself is getting to be expensive.

Yeah between the mini wargaming, computers and recent foray into combat robotics it’s all adding up.
