This is a tad embarrassing. You see, I thought that I was merely copying a popular Facebook group. I was unaware that Dull Men's Club was an official club. Please give the site a peruse as it is quite a delight!
The other day my car started misfiring. I performed a cylinder drop test by disconnecting each ignition coil and determined the misfire was coming from cylinder 2. I then swapped coils to see if that was the issue and the misfire disappeared completely. I did go ahead and replace that ignition coil with a name brand coil ( not cheap generic from the jungle site!)
Many years ago, I wrote a Laravel app that helps me track my workouts. Many commercial services did not (and still do not) allow me to enter some information that I consider relevant, so when I switched to a job that required some Laravel knowledge, I wrote this logging app that allows me to import Strava workouts and add my own stuff to them.
I have a brand new, unused one as well but I’m saving it untill this one is no longer good. This is roughly 7 years old and gets used monthly. I always put a trash bag over it which is why it’s still relatively clean.
Replaced the capacitor and all has been running cool again for about a week. Replaced my neighbor’s too. Theirs stopped working again after 48 hrs. One more replacement on theirs and we’re at 72 hrs of runtime since replacement.
My office fan went from squeaking a little when I first turned it on, but then the quieting down once it warmed up, to full on constant high pitched whine that didn’t stop.
Just got my 2nd Inguinal hernia operation. Nothing much else to do but walk frequently (god I miss my dog so much) and the rest of the time taking it easy with an e reader. (and finally some time to look at openhab)
Picking up where the title left off, I was rudely awaken by the high water alarm from my sump pump. This was odd, as we have an electric pump and a venturi backup that’s powered by city water.
I don’t know how to prove it, but I was carrying this pack of sparkling water, dropped it and this can flew out, that’s why its dented. Its still sealed, but has 0 sparkling water. I feel scammed.
My phone gave up the ghost, today, due to damage to the socket where the flex cable goes that transmits USB, audio and charging. Obviously I need at least to charge it somehow, so without the socket, I don’t see a way to keep the phone. I also don’t know how a new socket could be soldered into the motherboard.
It’s 67F and 90% humidity outside. I love that it’s not 70F, but I can do without the humidity. My old bones are very unhappy about it. Old arthritis is really making his presence known today.
To my suprise they are allready rotten. It is probably terrible for my health to have the spores now in my flat, but it smelled very nice when i came back.
The cat likes to claw up this specific little corner so I patched it up. Haven’t vaccuumed it up yet as I supposedly should leave it be for a few hours before I mess with it.
Not Jewish, was just low on groceries in the pantry. It’s actually pretty good. Like a pastry made out of spaghetti. Also might have been one of the first things I’ve cooked that turned out alright on the first attempt. Next time I’ll probably try putting more effort into actually caramelizing the sugar+oil before putting it on
The light poles in our front garden and in our backyard were in a sorry state: they were probably from the 80’s when the house was built, and the fiberglass spheres were literally being reclaimed by nature. I kid you not: I don’t know how that’s even possible, but moss was growing on them and one actually had holes under some of the moss patches:
It was sticking and not refilling correctly possibly due to some buildup. A bit of vinegar to clear out any buildup and a finger full of grease and it’s bobbing like a dream.
Turns out washing your head with shampoo twice and blow drying afterwards fixes my itchy scalp.
Don’t ask me why, I don’t know. I just know that since my hairdresser did that, I feel so much better.
I watch over the air tv. Especially as background fair. Notice the was pretty stable and clear and realize the weather was real good and decided to tell it to auto detect channels again. Wow so many channels came through. Had to hide a whole bunch (the hide interface is so annoying. click choose between two option and click. like seems super obviously click should just toggle view/hide). That is all. Oh watching have gun will travel atm.
With the meteorological fall a mere two weeks away, I thought I would share a maple leaf from one of the ones growing in my yard as a reminder the cold winds and long dark nights are nearing for those of us in the northern hemisphere.
I forgot to get blueberries last Sunday, and I ran out yesterday, so I went shopping early. Frozen berries with cream, cinnamon, and cashews is my nightly treat. I considered doing without till Sunday, but just went shopping early, instead.
Every video online showed a nice removable cap to access the bolt. Not my car! I had to remove the entire trim piece (mostly because it was stubborn and wouldn’t give me space for my tools).
The one that has the grain going the wrong direction, it’s a cutting bord cut off. I figured, what the hell, it’s probably just going to be decorative.
Some minty iced tea, some cold stuffed grape leaves and this pie called “chicken bastilla” which was amazing - crispy pastry with spiced chicken dusted with cinnamon and sugar…
It’s one of those freshnel lenses you glue to your rear window to act as a fisheye lens. It’s actually surprisingly good. I can see the ground about 1.5m (5ft) behind me. I wish it would reach my rear bumper as that’s what I’d like to see but this helps!
Which of course involved unloading the suitcases and duffel bags and putting the clothes and towels away, washing the linens, and going around the house and plugging everything back in. I had considered perhaps doing some yard work since the yard hasn’t been touched for over a week but it’s been raining and that’s my excuse not to.
My Onguard lock, that has served me well for over a decade (I have 2 of these, the other one has been in use for almost 15 years), had some of the pins stuck, preventing the key from going inside all the way. Oil didn’t help so I disassembled the lock, cleaned the parts and found two pins that had some slight wear/sharp bits from use that lodged them in place. I filed the sharp edges off from the pins, reassembled the lock and now it seems to work ok. While at it I learned how to serialize these locks and read the serial number of the lock from the key.
My computer desktop was really dusty an cluttered and I didn’t had much space, so I dusted everything and reorganized everything to have a little more space.
Pixel 8, 2 or 3 years old, got a pink line on one side of the screen. Used it like that before I thought about repair, and it turns out my phone was valid for an extended warranty.

My wife has proven to be really good at guessing movies by sound alone. I started tracking without her knowledge initially and we’re half way through our movies and she’s gotten 79.16% right within the first 10 seconds*.
Old one’s thread has given up. Nicked a new one from work in white as it is almost identical. Didn’t want to unceremoniously ditch the old one, it did a great job for many years and saw many events, so here’s a post to celebrate it. Thank you old faithful, long live the new faithful!
I asked my wife of 10+ years of she could go get some strings for my wife’s classical guitar today, because I wanted to start paying again after a long depression. I’ve finally got some of my artistic side back.
I replaced my water installation some weeks ago. The copper pipes did not show build-up. I cut the pipe at the hydrofor to make it easier getting it up the stairs that was another story. I think it’s 45 years of build-up
Because of some sad reasons I do need a 12V electric circuit at home. I use it mostly for a light. So I have a UPS with battery and 12V DC output. To make things not extremely ugly I got 12V led lamp with E27 base, so overall structure looked rather civil.
But at some moment the lamp started to illuminate too dim. It took a year or something I suppose, so it wasn’t noticeable until some day I thought “Hey, I can’t read anymore under this lamp”.
So I took a multimeter and start investigation (I know nothing about electrics besides those cramps they told me in school 30 years ago). I have DC12V 10W 900 lumen lamp which is supposed to “eat” around 800mA. Measurement showed 90mA. Then I started to experiment and measure UPS, battery, different combinations of different modes…
Replaced the bottom seal on the dishwasher door. The old one had disintegrated a while ago and I was getting little water drops on either side of the door. Also replaced the main door seal while I was at it. This is after I replaced the heating element a few days ago since it went out. Good refresher and much cheaper than a new unit
House built in 1922 with less than 6 ft ceilings. Dug out 100,000 lbs of material and hauled it off in buckets. Took me about 3 months. Now we have 8ft ceilings. Foundation work handled by professional with proper permits.
I’ve had these steel fans over a decade and I maintain them with a little grease each summer. This summer in particular, I think the grease in the can is degrading and I’ve needed to do this maintenance three times this year so far. Not wanting to futz with this another time this year, I tried a new lubricant: baby oil (the mineral oil base kind of baby oil).
Ethernet cupboard was looking messy, and full of lots of odd sizes and colours. And I wanted to hook up another device and was out. 5x 0.5m cat6 to the rescue. Might send a pic if it is dull enough when swapped over
During a boat trip, I stored my sunglasses at the bottom of a bag, without a case, along with everything else. A spot of glue ended up on one of the lenses. I tried every gentle product I could think of : dish soap, alcohol wipes, but nothing worked. It was impossible to remove.
This week I’ve been I rebuilding my main water installation and also did some procrastination (i’m good at that!) on the boring task of isolating warm water pipes, but now it’s done.
I got a couple Suzuki Samurai’s but I want a Monte Carlo, my second car. I love them. Mine had a 283, built with a friend that died years later and that killed me as a person. But building out a Monte in New England in February is not a light task.
I remembered when flash ‘died’ and thought all of that was just lost history.
Turns out there are translation layers that sites (e.g., new grounds) are running, and you can run flash games of the 2000s on your phone today.
Kind of crazy that a) I’m still able to see flash uploaded in 2000 and b) I remember some of the games now, 26 years later.
So there is this box turtle that lives in the woods in my back yard. We’ve only seen it a handful of times, but today when my wife was leaving for work she saw it by the garage. And while she was moving it she noticed it had some kind of growth on its neck. Expecting it would need help, I lined a box with a towel and put the turtle in.
We had a fun storm last night. An estimated 60mph/100kph straight line winds and heavy rain. It was amazing just how much you notice a wind storm like that even in the middle of the forest. The rain was nearly horizontal coming through the yard. Even though it rained like a cow pissin’ on a flat rock, I have no idea of what the rainfall was. Because you don’t get much rain in the guage when it’s nearly horizontal.
